When I first started using the signal, I would connect with my friends using our phone numbers. Now I use people who will interview stories, which means that some of my posts and articles on social media include a note that tells people how they can get me in the app.

In the signal, you actually use two different names: profile name and username. As we discussed, the username is what OOLS is looking for. Change your profile name and username
If you first create a signal account, you will be a challenge to set the profile name and photo. If you want to change it later:
- Click the profile icon to go to Settings.
- Click the profile icon again, and then change the profile name on the person’s icon.

- Use Android to click the profile icon. This will bring you to set up. Click the profile icon again.
- Use iOS to go to reports, and then click the profile icon again.
- Then click the “@” symbol and edit your username.
Once you set up a username, people can still search you with your phone number if you haven’t changed to a separate settings. If you don’t want people to find you by your phone number:
- Go to the Privacy Settings. On Android, click the three dots to the right and go to Settings> Personal Data Protection> Phone Number. On iOS, from your personal icon on the upper left, go to Settings> Personal Data Protection> Phone Number.

Message and calling other people

Share QR code with your username

Set nicknames for other users
If you make it easier to remember who is in the app, you can also set nicknames for your contacts. Just go to the person’s profile and click on Nickname Next to the pencil icon. - Then tap Messages disappear Set a specific time period.
The signal contains a number of options from 30 seconds to 4 weeks after sending. You also set your own time to remove messages.
For the added layer of protection, I set the screen lock and signal application on the phone to minimize the risk of anyone other than I could see my messages. You want to set the screen lock to the app, go to Settings> Personal Data Protection> Screen Lock. This option is only available on screen lock phones and not on the desktop version.
Transfer your account between devices
Let’s say you want to use your signal account on your phone and computer or iPad, the signal allows you to connect multiple devices to the phone number – but there are limits. You can connect up to five devices with one phone, but you can’t link to another phone. You can connect Android either tablets.
